But, the music will stop playing on the channel as we know it by the end of 2025. This is the sad news from Paramount Global, who announced the shutdown of several beloved channels across Europe after 44 years of broadcasting. It's a moment that signals a significant shift in how we consume media and experience music. The channels affected include MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live. The lights will first dim in the UK and Ireland, followed by France, Germany, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Australia, and Brazil.
This decision is driven by cost-cutting measures as Paramount Global merges with Skydance Media. However, it's also a reflection of the changing times.
But here's where it gets controversial... Digital platforms and streaming services have become the new battleground for music fans, leaving traditional TV channels struggling to compete. Despite the sense of community that MTV fostered for decades, personalized music experiences are now the norm.
The legacy began in the US in 1981, and the first video aired was ‘Video Killed The Radio Star’ by The Buggles – a rather prophetic start, wouldn't you say?
From there, MTV gave us iconic moments. For example, the premiere of Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' video in December 1983. Also, there was David Bowie advocating for Black artists on MTV News. And, let's not forget the pioneering reality show The Real World in the early 90s. Nirvana brought grunge into the mainstream with the constant airing of the ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ music video, and even the Courtney Love vs Madonna debacle.
MTV expanded to Europe in 1987, and shows like MTV Unplugged became legendary. The channel transformed music videos into art, launched careers, and defined youth culture.
By the 2010s, the rise of social media and on-demand streaming made traditional music television feel outdated. The MTV brand will live on through digital platforms and events like the VMAs and EMAs. However, by the end of 2025, the MTV music channels we grew up with will be gone.
